Kou Nelson, BA
Trainer, AKC CGC Evaluator, and Managing Member of The Collaborative Dog, LLC

By combining her love of teaching with her love of dogs, Kou has created a balance of learning theory (both human and dog) with canine behavior that is specific to each owner and dogs' needs.  With a positive attitude and a sense of humor, even the most daunting tasks become simple, relevant, and fun.

Kou (pronounced "co" as in collaborative) is a graduate of Marin Humane Society's Canine Behavior Academies I and II and  a former dog training coordinator at Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).  She is a credentialed secondary school teacher with a Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development certificate and 15 years of teaching experience at a variety of levels.  Kou volunteers in a variety of capacities with local animal rescue groups  and is also trained in several dog temperament testing methods, including Dr. Emily Weiss's SAFER testing and Sue Sternberg's Assess-a-Pet.  Kou is Red Cross Pet First Aid Certified and a full member of the Pet Professional Guild and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). She continues to further her education by taking classes that emphasize science over folklore and always keeps compassion for people and animals at the forefront.

Over her lifetime, Kou has had a variety of dogs in her household, including dachshunds, spaniels, a jindo, herding breeds, and "mystery mutts," giving her first hand experience with many breed characterisics. Her current dogs are AKC Canine Good Citizens who have enjoyed working as pet therapy dogs.   During her off hours, Kou can be found practicing canine freestyle routines or taking her dog on local off-leash trail hikes.
